When the holidays come around, everyone converges on your house, including Aunt Irene, Uncle Frank, all your siblings, and the grandkids too. That means that your plumbing is going to get a lot of heavy use, wear and tear from Turkey Day all the way through New Year's Day.
At Benicia Plumbing, we encounter this scenario all the time, so here are three common issues and how you can deal with them:
Hey--You're Out of Hot Water!
If there are more relatives and friends at your house and encountering hot water usage than normal, your hot water heater might not be able to keep up at its current setting. If your hot water heater is performing poorly, talk to us at Benicia Plumbing to consider replacing it with a newer, better, and more energy-efficient model before your guests arrive. Check out your water heater’s temperature setting and make needed adjustments, but do not set it in excess of 125 degrees. Plan for enough time between showers, so that your water heater has enough time to recover.
Oh No--Your Drain is Stopped Up!
Drain clogs can rapidly put a damper on your holiday gathering and can lead to many unexpected costs if they require the services of a plumber during the holidays. Knowing what you should not pour down the drain and garbage disposal can save you big time and prevent those hated holiday headaches. At Benicia Plumbing, we always tell our customers to never put fats, oils, and grease in your drain. When greasy substances get wet, they will swell and congeal because they cannot mix with water, and cause clogs deep within your plumbing system. In addition, liquid fats and cooking oils solidify and cause blockages.
Oops!--Your Faucet Drips!
There are 4 basic different types of faucets:
- Compression faucets
- Ball-type faucets
- Cartridge faucets
- Ceramic-disk faucets
Every faucet-type encounters varied issues and have to be repaired differently. Typical reasons for faucet dripping include serious corrosion, multiple mineral deposits on internal parts, and defective gaskets, O-rings, and/or washers. Most drippy faucet scenarios can be easily repaired, but ignoring a faulty faucet altogether can turn a simple repair into a $1,000-plus project. Additionally, a very drippy faucet can lead to over 100 gallons of water waste every month, which is lousy for the environment and bad for your wallet.
